Toyota Hilux: Built for the rough stuff
For such a journey, a reliable vehicle is essential. Erik and Marijke worked with us to prepare their Hilux for the tough job. We fitted the vehicle with a robust Alu-Cab body, made practical modifications, and provided technical advice so they could set off with peace of mind.
Challenges along the way
Africa put the Hilux and its drivers to the test: deep potholes, mud puddles, rocky roads, and even a violent robbery in Senegal. There were also technical obstacles, such as damage to the suspension and steering rack after a blowout. Still, the choice of a Toyota proved to be worth its weight in gold: parts are readily available, and with a little creativity from local mechanics, they were always able to continue.
The Alu-Cab: at home while traveling
The Alu-Cab Canopy Camper proved to be a reliable travel companion. It offered protection and comfort, and became Erik and Marijke's daily home. "We never stayed in a hotel, only in the Canopy – and it was perfect," they told us.
What did this adventure teach us? Good preparation, reliable technology, and the right partners make all the difference. Our support along the way gave Erik and Marijke extra confidence. Their Hilux is no longer just a car, but the solid foundation for a journey they will cherish for the rest of their lives.
